How to read IIT placement packages

Headlines love the biggest figure, but it rarely reflects a typical graduate. Here is what each number means before you compare institutes.

CTC vs in-hand
Packages are quoted as CTC (cost to company) — base pay plus bonuses, stock and relocation. Take-home pay is meaningfully lower, especially for the very large offers.
Average vs median key
A few crore-plus offers pull the average upward. The median — the middle student — is usually a better guide to a typical outcome.
Domestic vs international
The top figures are often international offers in foreign currency. They are not directly comparable to domestic CTCs, so we label every offer.
Branch matters
Computer-science and electronics averages can be two to three times those of core branches at the same institute. Always read branch-wise figures.
